Nestled in the heart of New Zealand’s North Island, Mount Ruapehu and the surrounding Tongariro National Park are true natural wonders. Not only is Mount Ruapehu the highest peak in the North Island, but it’s also one of the most active volcanoes in the country. Its unique blend of geological features and the stunning landscapes that envelop it make this destination a haven for nature lovers and winter sports enthusiasts alike.
Two major ski resorts, Whakapapa and Turoa, call this region home, offering incredible opportunities for snow sports. The diverse terrain and awe-inspiring vistas at these resorts create the perfect setting for those eager to learn and savour the thrill of snowboarding. As you glide down the slopes, you’ll be treated to panoramic views that will take your breath away. I was fortunate enough to spend over 4 weeks snowboarding, staying at the Park Hotel, and enjoy the delights of their fantastic outdoor hot tubs with a beer after a long day.
But the magic doesn’t stop at the ski resorts. The surrounding Tongariro National Park is a treasure trove of striking scenery. One highlight is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a famous hiking trail celebrated for its breath-taking landscapes. This trail invites you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area, with its diverse terrain, emerald lakes, and volcanic craters.
