Aoraki / Mount Cook is indeed the highest mountain in New Zealand, and its elevation is approximately 3,724 meters (12,218 feet). It is located in the Southern Alps, a mountain range that stretches across the length of New Zealand’s South Island.
As for its connection to Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy, Mount Cook was used as one of the locations to represent the fictional Lonely Mountain in the film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, “The Hobbit.” The Lonely Mountain, also known as Erebor in Tolkien’s Middle-earth, is the home of the dwarves and the site of the dragon Smaug’s lair. The stunning and rugged landscape around Mount Cook provided a fitting backdrop for the film’s portrayal of this iconic location in Middle-earth.
