Nestled southeast of Christchurch, New Zealand, Akaroa is a charming town perched on the Banks Peninsula. The stars of Akaroa’s aquatic realm are undoubtedly the Hector’s dolphins, the world’s smallest dolphin species. With mature adults measuring just 1.2–1.6 meters in length and weighing 40–60 kilograms, these endearing creatures are classified as “nationally endangered,” with an estimated population of around 10,000. Notably, Banks Peninsula serves as a vital sanctuary, hosting approximately 1,000 Hector’s dolphins.
However, the precarious state of New Zealand’s dolphins is a stark reminder of the need for conservation efforts, with as few as 55 Maui dolphins remaining, underscoring the importance of protecting these magnificent marine species.
